What is a passkey?
Passkeys are a secure authentication method we offer. They allow you to login and approve 2-step verification with your face, fingerprint, a device PIN or a hardware security key without ever needing to type a password.
Passkeys are:
- Faster: Use face and fingerprint recognition to verify it’s you in seconds.
- More secure: Passkeys are phishing-resistant. They can’t be guessed or reused.
- Useable across multiple devices: Log in with your face or fingerprint on any of your synced devices, through a passkey that’s stored securely in the cloud.
Why are passkeys safer?
A passkey consists of two parts: a public key that is stored by Wise and a corresponding private key on your device. When you log in, Wise checks to see if the two keys match. To do that, you are simply asked to use your face or fingerprint similar to unlocking the device you are using.
Where can passkeys be stored?
Passkeys can be stored in your credential manager such as Apple iCloud, Google Password Manager or 1Password. These credential managers typically support syncing your Passkey to multiple devices. This means that the Passkey can be used on any device with access to your credential manager.
Passkeys can also be stored outside of your credential manager directly on your device or browser. In this case, you will need one passkey per device.
Setting up a passkey
To set up your passkey:
- Go to your name or initials in the top corner
- Select Security and privacy under Settings
- Select 2-step verification
- Select Passkeys
- Confirm it’s you using your existing 2-step verification method
- Go through the browser or device flow to finish setting up. You'll need a compatible browser and device (listed below).
- Once you've set it up, Passkeys will be your default 2-step verification method.
You'll be able to use your passkey for any action that needs 2-step verification.
Log in with a passkey
To log in with a passkey after you've set it up:
- At log-in, select Log in with passkey at the bottom of the page
- Go through the browser or device flow using your face, fingerprint, or device PIN to finish logging in
To log in on new devices, you'll need to complete additional authentication challenges. If you can’t access your passkey, you can still use your email and password on the login page.
Manage your passkeys
To manage your passkeys:
- Go on your name or initials in the top corner
- Select Security and privacy under Settings
- Select 2-step verification
- Select Passkeys
- You can: - Add an additional passkey — just select Add
- Rename an existing passkey — just select Edit next to the passkey you want to rename, select Rename and Save

Remove a passkey
To remove a passkey you've set up:
- Go on your name or initials in the top corner
- Select Security and privacy under Settings
- Select 2-step verification
- Select Passkeys
- Select Edit next to the passkey you want to remove
- Select Delete and confirm it’s you using your existing 2-step verification method
If you've removed a passkey from your Wise account, it won't work anymore. Even if you still see it as a login option, you won't be able to use it to log in and might get an error.
To remove the passkey from showing as an login option, you'll need to delete it from your credential manager.
