We’re sorry to hear about our customer’s passing. In order to help you in the best way possible, we’ll need to collect some documentation.
Required Documents
The following documents will allow us to disclose account information that you may need for probate proceedings. To proceed, we’ll need the following documents:
Death Certificate – An official copy is required to close any account in our customer’s name. Interim death certificates or certificates of fact of death issued by funeral homes and similar documents may be accepted if valid under local laws.
Multiple Executor/Next of Kin Authorization – If multiple executors or next of kin share authority, they must grant power of attorney to one representative that reaches out to us. Alternatively, all parties must sign our authorization form.
Identification Documents – Copies of ID for all executors or legal next of kin. Provide both sides of the ID, if applicable.
Additional Documents Based on Will Status
Depending on whether the customer had a will, we’ll also need:
If there is a will or proof of appointment as executor (testate) – a copy of the will or official proof of executor appointment (all pages required).
If there is no will (intestate) – documents showing proof of relationship (e.g., birth or marriage certificate) per the intestacy law of the customer’s country of residence.
Under succession law, status as a next of kin (or local equivalent) is only valid in absence of a will. If a will exists, the executors are the only ones with rights to the information and eventually the funds.
How do I send the documents to Wise?
Please send documentation to our specialised team by:
emailing bereavements@wise.com or
upload them via this secure link — you'll need a Wise account for this option. Just let us know if you upload here, so we can take a look.
All documents are stored securely and privately.
For security reasons, we can't access public file-sharing services like Google Drive or OneDrive. While PDFs are preferred, we also accept most common image formats.
Who we can share information with
If you’re helping the executor(s) or legal next of kin navigate our process, please inform us and provide an email address for each executor appointed or legal next of kin. We can only share account information with them.
If you’re not legally representing our customer, but request to engage in our process on behalf of the executor or next of kin, your request may be rejected and our ability to communicate further may be terminated. This can be at any time for a variety of reasons and it’s in line with our regulatory responsibilities.
If funds are held on the account of our deceased customer
For any and all refunds related to our customer’s account, we’ll work on refunding to the next of kin or appointed executor.
You’ll need to fill in a form, depending on where the deceased person was residing:
The form should be filled thoroughly and signed by the executor(s) of the will.
Depending on the succession law of the country where our customer resided, we may need:
a finalised grant of probate
letters of administration
or the local equivalent conferring the executors the right to move funds from financial institutions.
We may ask you to have this finalised document legalised internationally by means of an apostille certificate or a similar process if said document is issued in a different country from our customer’s registered address.
We understand that the final ‘Grant of Probate’ or ‘letters of administration’ or local equivalents document may take some time to produce. This document is only needed for the refund stage of our process.
